Can you guess the number one place where people forget to apply sunscreen?

It's the lips—which also happens to be one of the areas most vulnerable to sun damage and even skin cancers.

The problem is, it's not so easy to find a lip balm that contains mineral sunscreen, let alone one with a tint!

That's why I'm so happy I discovered the COOLA Mineral Liplux range.

Read on for my complete review—including the ingredients, textures, shade range, and of course, swatches!

COOLA Background

COOLA Chris Birchby

COOLA founder Chris Birchby.

First, a little bit about COOLA, in case you're new to the brand.

COOLA was founded in 2004 by Chris Birchby, a California-based grad student whose parents were both diagnosed with melanoma around the same time. Disappointed with the sunscreens on the market, especially the lack of organic options, Chris decided to create his own—despite having no prior experience in skincare or cosmetic chemistry.

Fun fact: While in school, he became a professional poker player, and used his earnings to help fund the start-up!

Today, COOLA is one of the fastest-growing suncare companies in the world, offering a full array of SPF products to protect the face, body... and lips!

COOLA Mineral Liplux Tinted Lip Balm with Sunscreen

COOLA Mineral Liplux

COOLA Mineral Liplux Organic Tinted Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30 in Skinny Dip, Nude Beach, Tan Line, Summer Crush, Firecracker and Bonfire.

COOLA Mineral Liplux is an SPF 30 mineral sunscreen lip balm that comes in a rainbow of sheer, natural-looking tints.

Not only does it protect your lips from UVA and UVB rays using all-mineral ingredients, it's also water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. So it will stay on even when you're swimming (or sweating!).

And yet, it's still a natural formula. COOLA Mineral Liplux is made from more than 70 percent organic ingredients, including naturally-derived colours and flavours. It's also reef-friendly, cruelty-free, paraben-free, non-nano and non-GMO.

Oh, and it's not just for lips... you can wear the shades as blush and cheek highlighter, too!

COOLA Mineral Liplux Ingredients and Texture

COOLA Mineral Liplux

COOLA Mineral Liplux Organic Tinted Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30 in Skinny Dip, Nude Beach, Tan Line, Summer Crush, Firecracker and Bonfire.

In terms of active ingredients, you're being protected with 3.0 percent zinc oxide and 3.6 percent titanium dioxide.

Yes, these are lower concentrations than what is recommended in my sunscreen ingredients tutorial—and that's likely because of the challenge of formulating them into a lip balm. If you want to be extra-protected, I recommend doing a layer of your regular face sunscreen over your lips first. Let it dry, and then slick COOLA Mineral Liplux on top!

As for the inactive ingredients, they're slightly different for each shade. But as an example, here's the full ingredients list for Firecracker, the most popular:

As someone who can be sensitive to ingredients in lip balms, I'm happy to report that I've experienced zero chapping or irritation. The formula is genuinely nourishing, and stays on your lips for hours!

Now, let's talk texture. I need to warn you—this lip balm tends to be a little dry initially.

But don't worry! In my experience, you just need to use the product a few times, and then it will start to soften up and glide on easily.

COOLA Mineral Liplux Swatches

The full shade lineup of COOLA Mineral Liplux includes:

Of these, I purchased the first six—and now I need the other two!

These give your lips a modern, balmy sheen rather than a wet-looking gloss. They range from sheer to slightly more opaque, depending on the colour. The lighter ones let more of your natural lip tone peek through, while the darker ones are almost like a lipstick.

Here's how they look on my lips!

Skinny Dip

COOLA Mineral Liplux Skinny Dip

Skinny Dip is described as a sheer tint. That's accurate for when I swatch it on my skin, but when it's on my lips, you can see that it's a little bit lighter than my lip colour (probably from the minerals). Still, I don't find it chalky or anything—it's more of a brightening, glossy effect. This shade would be perfect as a highlighter, too!

Nude Beach

COOLA Mineral Liplux Nude Beach

Nude Beach is described as a light pink tint. On my lips, it's actually hard to distinguish this from the previous one, but I think that's because my lip tone is naturally rosy. This shade is more opaque, and just a nice soft baby pink.

Tan Line

COOLA Mineral Liplux Tan Line

Tan Line is described as a rich coral tint. I'm all about the orangey colours, so of course I love this one! It's not super opaque, so your own lip tone will show through a bit. For that reason, I think it would work for just about every complexion, on lips and/or cheeks.

Summer Crush

COOLA Mineral Liplux Summer Crush

Summer Crush is described as a deep pink tint. I don't find it dark at all, though, so if you love sheer raspberry tones, you'll love this. On me, it's sort of a "your lips, only better" colour. Very pretty, and another shade that should flatter everybody.

Firecracker

COOLA Mineral Liplux Firecracker

Firecracker is described as a bold red tint. This is the brightest shade of the bunch, but because it's still sheer, it takes on some of your natural lip tone. That's why it looks more pinky-red on me. I like this so much, I'd wear it instead of red lipstick!

Bonfire

COOLA Mineral Liplux Bonfire

Bonfire is described as a copper bronze tint. It's the deepest shade, and on me turns out to be a warm brownish red. Very 1990s! I find this one feels more creamy, and is the most opaque and lipstick-like of the bunch.

As for the other two tints in the range, Coral Reef is a coral pink, and Purple Sky is a bright magenta.
